Carmel Cemetery)Earlier this week, while waiting for my car to be repaired at a local shop, I stumbled upon Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Glendale Queens. I've come across this cemetery a few times in books and articles over the years while researching and figured I'd pop in and take a look around.

Using my smart phone, I went to findagrave.com to see if I could discover any famous Lower East Siders interred here... To my surprise, several historical figures were listed: Jacob Adler! Stella Adler! Henny Youngman! Sholem Aleichem! Abe Reles!

(To a history nerd like me, yes, this was exciting.)

It turns out that there were quite a few notable former LES residents buried here, so I set aside a few hours and trekked around with a map, camera, and guidance from the very accommodating staff at the cemetery office.

Below is what I discovered, as well as a guide to help you plan your own visit. I'm too lazy to write individual bios, so if you don't know who these people are, follow the links to their Wikipedia pages.

MAPPING YOUR VISIT

Though the official address of Mt. Carmel is 83-45 Cypress Hills Street -- Google shows the entrance to Section No. 1 as 82-27 Cypress Hills Street, Queens, NY 11385 and Section No. 2 as 65-23 Cooper Ave, Queens, NY 11385.

You can print out the maps below to take with you on your visit (click each one to enlarge). The graves I've featured are in two different sections --about half mile from each other -- of this massive 100+ acre cemetery. Driving is recommended, but many can walk it (I did). If you need help with directions, you can stop in at the front office located at the entrance of Section No. 1.

Did you know that Levi Strauss began his career on the Lower East Side?

In 1847, at age 18, Levi Strauss (born Leob Strauss, February 26, 1829) left his native home in Bavaria to join his older brothers in NYC, who owned a wholesale dry goods store on the Lower East Side.

By 1853, young Levi received an offer to partner with a businessman who opened a dry goods store in San Fransisco a few years prior. Loaded with goods from the Lower East Side store, Levi packed up and headed to California to take advantage of the booming gold rush industry.

Levi tried to sell canvass he brought from New York, but the material proved to be too thin for tents and wagon covers -- so instead he had a tailor create pants from the material.

Eventually Levi's product became so popular that he had his brothers send him more material, but instead of canvass, they sent him denim -- and the rest is history.

Happy 186th birthday Levi Strauss!
Lower East Side History Project - http://leshp.org
Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05740688325728150023noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6630818291750153563.post-5084824620432173752015-02-25T22:13:00.004-05:002015-02-25T22:13:47.577-05:00On this day in 1855<div class="_5pbx userContent" data-ft="{"tn":"K"}">

King Glassware restaurant supply company closed after 81 years.

Dating back to 1933, King Glassware may have been the oldest surviving restaurant supply store on The Bowery. Just last week, neighborhood archivist Adam Woodward came across this 81 year old mainstay at 112 Bowery shuttered with "FOR RENT" signs hanging on the gates.

King's phone number is disconnected and its website down, leading us to believe the decades-old business is gone for good and not simply relocating.

Surviving two world wars, the Great Depression, recessions in the 1980s and 2000s, as well as an abundance of competition from the dozens of restaurant supply stores along the thoroughfare is no small feat. Back in 1995, co-owner Fred LaMay told the New York Times about competition from the rise of similar stores opening on The Bowery, and the pressure to sell out.

"There are 30
percent more restaurant suppliers than there were 10 or 15 years ago," LaMay said.

At a time when shop owners were enticed to sell their buildings at 30% or more above market rate, LaMay turned down all offers.

"We tell them we're not interested," he said. "We'll sell when we retire."

We've reached out to the building owners for an interview but have yet to hear back. If we get any more information in the future we'll update this article.
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: large;">This unique program has already gained an overwhelming amount of support from parents, educators and administrators, as well as the students themselves. Inside the former Atlantic Gardens beer hall at 50-52 Bowery.

The structure, which is currently slated for demolition, sits on what is believed to be the footprint of a historic tavern and livestock market dating back to the 18th century.

Acting on a hunch, preservationist Adam Woodward toured the site and discovered a cellar which very well could be the foundation of the Revolutionary War era Bull's Head Tavern.

If so, this will be one of the most important archaeological discoveries on Manhattan Island in recent history.
